Hidden Stems by Earthly Branch in Bazi
Hidden stems (藏干 Cang Gan) are the heavenly stems concealed inside each earthly branch. Every earthly branch in your Bazi chart contains one, two, or three hidden stems that influence your luck pillars, ten gods, and elemental balance — often more powerfully than the visible stems in the pillars.
This article is a complete per-branch reference. Each section lists the hidden stems, their elemental roles (chief qi / middle qi / residual qi), and how they appear in your Bazi reading.
What Are Hidden Stems (Cang Gan)?
Hidden stems are Heavenly Stems embedded within each of the 12 Earthly Branches. When an Earthly Branch appears in your Year, Month, Day, or Hour Pillar, its hidden stems add invisible elemental layers to that pillar.
The chief hidden stem (正气 zhèng qì) is the dominant energy and carries the most weight. Secondary stems (中气 / 余气) contribute a softer influence but still affect your ten gods and favorable elements calculation.

Hidden Stems in the Chou Branch (丑)
Chou (Ox) hides: Ji Earth 己 (chief) · Gui Water 癸 (middle) · Xin Metal 辛 (residual)
The Chou branch is a cold, damp earth pillar associated with winter storage. Its chief hidden stem Ji Earth (己) is yin earth — receptive, nurturing, fertile. The Gui Water (癸) beneath Ji Earth creates a contradictory tension: water weakens earth, representing a branch that holds moisture even in frozen winter.
Chou's Xin Metal (辛) is the residual qi — a reminder that autumn metal energy lingers as the year transitions to winter. Xin in Chou is weaker than Xin in You but still activates when Chou combines with Si and You to form the Metal Frame (三合金局).
Reading Chou in your chart:
- If you are a Wood Day Master, Ji Earth in Chou is your Indirect Wealth (偏财). Gui Water is your Direct Officer or Seven Killings depending on your stem's polarity.
- Chou and Wei (未) form a direct clash (相冲) — both hold Ji Earth as chief qi, creating instability in the earth element.
- Chou, Si, and You form the Metal Combination Frame (三合金局): Xin Metal in Chou activates in this configuration.
Hidden Stems in the Si Branch (巳)
Si (Snake) hides: Bing Fire 丙 (chief) · Geng Metal 庚 (middle) · Wu Earth 戊 (residual)
The Si branch is pure fire with a striking internal composition. Its chief Bing Fire (丙) blazes strong — it is the peak of summer fire energy. However, Si simultaneously conceals Geng Metal (庚), which Fire controls. This makes Si a branch where fire dominates but already begins the cycle of metal — a hidden transition embedded in the peak of yang.
Si's Wu Earth (戊) is the residual qi: fire produces earth, creating the natural generative cycle within the branch.
Reading Si in your chart:
- Bing Fire in Si is at its rooftop (长生/临官) — extremely strong. Si is the strongest fire branch for most calculation systems.
- Si, You, and Chou combine to form Metal Frame (三合金局), powered by Geng Metal hidden inside Si.
- Si and Hai (亥) form a direct clash: Fire (Si) clashes Water (Hai). When both appear in the same chart or luck pillar, expect instability in fire and water elements.
- If you are a Metal Day Master, Bing Fire in Si is your Seven Killings (七杀) if Yang Metal (Geng/庚), or Direct Officer (正官) if Yin Metal (Xin/辛).
Hidden Stems in the Hai Branch (亥)
Hai (Pig) hides: Ren Water 壬 (chief) · Jia Wood 甲 (middle)
The Hai branch holds only two hidden stems — making it one of the purest branches in the system. Ren Water (壬) is its chief qi: expansive, flowing yang water representing the ocean and the deep source. Jia Wood (甲) as the middle qi shows that water naturally generates wood — the cycle of growth begins here.
Reading Hai in your chart:
- Ren Water in Hai is extremely powerful. Hai is one of the strongest positions for water — it is the rooftop (长生) of Yang Metal and the starting gate of water.
- Hai, Mao, and Wei form the Wood Combination Frame (三合木局): Jia Wood in Hai activates strongly in this grouping.
- Hai and Si directly clash: if both appear together, your chart experiences fire-water conflict — health, career, and relationship instability depending on which elements are your favorable ones.
- If your Day Master is Wood, Hai's Jia Wood is Self (比肩 or 劫财 depending on polarity), and Ren Water is your Direct Resource (正印) — a powerful resource branch.
Hidden Stems in the Yin Branch (寅)
Yin (Tiger) hides: Jia Wood 甲 (chief) · Bing Fire 丙 (middle) · Wu Earth 戊 (residual)
The Yin branch is the start of spring and the beginning of the yearly cycle. Its chief Jia Wood (甲) embodies explosive upward growth — the pioneer, the new sprout breaking through frozen earth. Bing Fire (丙) as middle qi shows wood generating fire naturally, while Wu Earth (戊) as residual qi represents the foundation beneath.
Reading Yin in your chart:
- Yin, Wu, and Xu combine to form the Fire Combination Frame (三合火局): Bing Fire in Yin activates strongly.
- Yin and Shen (申) directly clash: Wood (Yin) vs Metal (Shen) — a forceful clash that disrupts stability in whichever pillar each occupies.
- Yin month (February, roughly) signals the start of spring in the solar calendar. Bazi uses Li Chun (立春, Start of Spring) as the actual turning point — not the Lunar New Year.
- If your Day Master is Earth, Yin's Jia Wood is your Seven Killings (甲克戊 — yang wood controlling yang earth). Jia Wood in Yin is at its strongest possible position.
Hidden Stems in the Remaining Branches
Zi (子) — Single-Stem Branch
Gui Water 癸 (chief only). Zi is the purest water branch, holding only Yin Water. Simple, direct, cold. Zi and Wu (午) clash directly. Zi, Chen, and Shen combine to form the Water Frame (三合水局).
Mao (卯) — Single-Stem Branch
Yi Wood 乙 (chief only). Mao holds only Yin Wood — flexible, creeping, resilient vegetation. Mao and You (酉) clash directly — one of the most common clashes in practice.
You (酉) — Single-Stem Branch
Xin Metal 辛 (chief only). You is the purest metal branch and the strongest position for Xin Metal. You and Mao clash. You, Chou, and Si form the Metal Frame.
Chen (辰) — Earth Branch
Wu Earth 戊 (chief) · Yi Wood 乙 (middle) · Gui Water 癸 (residual). Chen is the Graveyard (库) of Water — it stores Gui Water. Chen and Xu clash. Shen, Zi, and Chen form the Water Frame.
Wu (午) — Fire Branch
Ding Fire 丁 (chief) · Ji Earth 己 (middle). Wu is the peak of yang fire. Wu and Zi clash. Yin, Wu, and Xu form the Fire Frame. Ding Fire in Wu is extremely powerful.
Wei (未) — Earth Branch
Ji Earth 己 (chief) · Ding Fire 丁 (middle) · Yi Wood 乙 (residual). Wei is the Graveyard of Wood. Wei and Chou clash (both Ji Earth dominant). Hai, Mao, and Wei form the Wood Frame.
Shen (申) — Metal Branch
Geng Metal 庚 (chief) · Ren Water 壬 (middle) · Wu Earth 戊 (residual). Shen is the rooftop of Yang Water and one of the strongest metal branches. Shen and Yin clash. Shen, Zi, Chen form the Water Frame.
Xu (戌) — Earth Branch
Wu Earth 戊 (chief) · Xin Metal 辛 (middle) · Ding Fire 丁 (residual). Xu is the Graveyard of Fire — it stores Ding Fire. Xu and Chen clash. Yin, Wu, and Xu form the Fire Frame.
How to Use Hidden Stems in Bazi Analysis
Step 1: Identify All Hidden Stems in Your Chart
Use the reference table above to list every hidden stem across your Year, Month, Day, and Hour branches. Write them out alongside the visible heavenly stems.
Step 2: Calculate Ten Gods for Each Hidden Stem
Each hidden stem generates a specific ten god relationship with your Day Master. A hidden Bing Fire (丙) in Si means a different ten god depending on your Day Master element and polarity. Use the Ten Gods complete guide for mapping.
Step 3: Check the Strength of Each Hidden Stem
- Chief qi (正气): strongest — nearly always fully active
- Middle qi (中气): moderate — activated by luck pillars or annual stems
- Residual qi (余气): weakest — mainly activated by combination frames (三合/三会)
Step 4: Watch for Combination Frames
When three branches combine (三合局 — e.g., Si, You, Chou for Metal), the hidden stems of all three fire up simultaneously. This can dramatically amplify an element in your chart during the corresponding years or luck pillars.
Step 5: Account for Clashes
When two clashing branches appear together (e.g., Chou clashes Wei), their hidden stems destabilize. The dominant branch's hidden stems weaken temporarily. This is especially significant when the clashing branch is your Decade Luck Pillar (Da Yun).
Hidden Stems and the Da Yun (Luck Pillars)
Your luck pillars each carry an earthly branch whose hidden stems become active energies during that decade. If your current luck pillar is Chou (丑), then Ji Earth, Gui Water, and Xin Metal all exert pressure on your chart for 10 years — regardless of what the visible stem of that pillar is.
This is why practitioners look beyond the visible pillar stem and always examine the hidden stems inside each decade's branch.
Key Takeaways
- Every earthly branch hides 1–3 heavenly stems (chief qi, middle qi, residual qi) that invisibly shape your chart
- Chou branch hides Ji Earth, Gui Water, and Xin Metal — a cold earth branch with water storage
- Si branch hides Bing Fire, Geng Metal, and Wu Earth — fire that already carries the seed of metal
- Hai branch hides Ren Water and Jia Wood — the purest water branch and the source of wood growth
- Yin branch hides Jia Wood, Bing Fire, and Wu Earth — the pioneer of spring, explosive growth
- Single-stem branches (Zi, Mao, You) are the purest elemental representations
- Combination frames (三合) activate hidden stems across multiple branches simultaneously
- Always calculate ten gods for hidden stems — they often hold your most important career, wealth, or resource stars
